Eumetcal Workshop 2007

Registration for the Eumetcal Workshop 2007 is now open

The third Eumetcal Workshop will be held from 29 to 31 August 2007 in Reading, UK. The workshop will be hosted by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The proximity of leading experts in numerical weather prediction (NWP) will greatly enhance NWP training activities in Eumetcal and will hopefully result in fruitful collaboration between training experts.

The Eumetcal Workshop will for the first time also include hydrologists. Our aim is to hold an effective workshop where trainers have a chance to meet, discuss and hear new developments in training across Europe. The workshop will draw together trainers from all Eumetcal member NMSs, EUMETSAT, ECMWF and interested parties to discuss future developments in training in NMSs and to learn about the training methods and resources available.

In connection with the workshop, we will hold a round table discussion on the future of training activities related to both advances in modern technology and the changing role of both weather and hydrology forecasters. There will also be meetings of the newly established Eumetcal working groups. The strategy for the next 5-year programme phase of Eumetcal is built on increasing the significance of the working group work. This is partly driven by decrease in the overall budget and the start of the blended learning courses. The envisaged groups are:

-  Satellite Meteorology
-  Radar Meteorology
-  Hydrometeorology
-  Numerical Weather Prediction
-  Aviation Meteorology
-  Severe Weather
-  Climate and Climate Change
-  Tools and Technologies for Training

The tasks of the working groups are (with exeption of tools & technologies) to:

-  Define a syllabus for continuous education training (CET) of national meteorological and/or hydrometeorological services
-  Carry out a survey of existing training material
-  Suggest actions for the completion of the material for the syllabus
-  Form a partnership for the delivery of a blended learning course

You are invited to submit your registration for the workshop by 15 June 2007. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee financial support for the participants at this stage.

You can find additional information along with a draft schedule for the workshop on the ECMWF web pages at the following address:
