Summary

"The Satellite Palette" Satellite meteorology is an art as well as a science. Humans have a skill set that is indispensable to solving the earth and atmospheric puzzle. Using the human skill set and a tool belt of conceptual models, the human role in the analysis and diagnosis of both satellite imagery and NWP is absolutely critical to the prediction process. With the understanding that results from this analysis and diagnosis, the human is quite capable of making consistent, reasonable and value added improvements to the NWP. Without this analysis and diagnosis, the proposed "man-machine mix" deteriorates from the envisioned Professional-Machine Symbiotic relationship into a Mechanic-Machine Servitude.

The objectives of this session are:

-  Present the basics of water vapour imagery
-  Explain Satellite Dynamic Feature Analysis, in particular moisture circulations and moisture edges
-  Introduce the deformation zone conceptual model
-  Introduce different types of deformation zones
-  Understand the relation between the appearance of deformation zones and synoptic development (e.g. digging trough, building ridge block)
-  Exercise the above on a Typical Day

Pre-requisites:
-  Experience with Water Vapour imagery
-  Some Operational Meteorology Experience
