Fifth Eumetcal Workshop 3-5 November 2009

The fifth international EUMETCAL Workshop will be held from 3 to 5 November 2009 at the Meteorological Training and Conference Center in Langen, Germany, hosted by the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD).

This Workshop is aimed at trainers and professionals with training responsibilities in the field of meteorology, hydrology and climatology.

The Workshop themes are:

1. Optimal utilization of different tools for training

- Smart board
- Design of web page
- Wiki
- Virtual libraries
- Learning platforms (e.g., MOODLE)
- Distant teaching (e.g., Centra)
- E-Learning authoring (Flash, Scenari, MeteoCal)

2. Pedagogical aspects and didactics for training

- Alternatives to blended seminars?
- Optimizing structures of training events (number of participants and events, length of seminars, individual learning units)
- Motivation and activation of participants
- Methods and ethic for evaluating participants and trainers
- Post-course phases: Exploiting the legacy of course participants
- Challenges and benefits of training in multi-cultural environments
- Trainer: Training expert versus science expert

3. Future challenges for training

- Future scenarios of roles and needs of meteorological staff: adapting the training
- Consequences from the new guideline „WMO No 258“
- Delivering training to developing countries: Challenges and benefits
- Training in different economical contexts

4. Communication

- Effective synergy and exchange between different „training communities“ (Calmet, CMA, COMET, EUMETCAL and EUMeTrain, WMO, etc)
- Harmonization of training strategies among different countries/services
- Questionnaires for training demands and evaluation

Pre-Workshop meetings of EUMETCAL working groups on 2nd November 2009

The Eumetcal Working Groups (WG) are open
forums for the development and planning of continuous professional
development activities.

In the WG meetings in Langen, 2nd November, the members of each WG will separately discuss the recent developments of the activities within the WG and plan the future activities (meetings, courses, workshops, etc.) for the upcoming year.

To attend the Working Group Meetings on Monday 2nd November please contact the leader of the corresponding working group and request to be included in the list of participants. We wish your active participation and we expect contributions from you.

Practical Information

The Workshop will take place at the Meteorological Training and Conference Center of the DWD in Langen, Germany.

Frankfurt-Airport is near-by and direct flights are available from many airports. Logistical details will be given later.

Attending the Workshop does not require any registration fee.

Financial support is unfortunately not available.

Language

The entire Workshop will be conducted in English language. No translation will be available.

Registration and Proposal Submission

The purpose of the workshop is to share experiences, suggestions and ideas for improving the traditional and e-based teaching and learning processes in meteorological training. We are looking forward for receiving proposal, either oral presentation or poster.
