The story of the Mike Low – the case summary Synoptic situation

On the 4th of February a strong High over northwestern Russia together with a wide trough outside the coast of Nordland. Troms gave an easterly to southeasterly flow out from central Scandinavia and into the North and Norwegian sea.

Except for a cloud area over Northern Finnmark, most of Scandinavia was almost cloud free with low temperatures, -20 to -28 ºC inland in southwestern part of Norway.

Convective clouds formed some way off the coast of Norway, and cloud streets can clearly be seen as indication of the cold air outbreak.
