1. Fourth Eumetcal Workshop call for abstracts DL 31 March 2008

The fourth international Eumetcal workshop will be held from 26 to 28 August 2008 in Météo-France facilities in Toulouse, France kindly hosted by the Ecole Nationale de la Météorologie (ENM). The Workshop is aimed at trainers and professionals with training responsibilities in the field of meteorology and hydrology. It will focus on cooperation between NHMSs to develop and deliver continuous professional development training.

The Eumetcal Workshop will for the first time be entirely open for participant presentations. We are looking for contributions also from a wider audience dealing especially with one or more of the following themes:
- eLearning pedagogy for adult learners
- Blended learning approaches
- Computer assisted learning (CAL) experiences and best practices
- Using eLearning in meteorology and hydrology
- Experiences on Learning Management Systems (LMS, i.e. Moodle)
- Evaluation of Online Programmes

The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 31st March 2008.

Please send your abstracts in pdf format to Jaakko. The selection of abstracts will be made by the Eumetcal Steering Group and workshop organisers.

Registration for the workshop will opened in May 2008. The workshop is free of charge for participants. Financial support for travel expenses cannot be guaranteed. To enquire about financial support, please contact Meryem Uz at EUMETSAT.

2. Eumetcal Working Group Meetings 25th August 2008

In connection to the fourth Eumetcal Workshop, the Eumetcal Working Groups will meet for a one-day meeting on the Monday 25th August in Toulouse, Météo-France facilities. The aim of these meetings is to plan and carry out working group tasks.

To attend the Working Group Meetings on Monday 25th August, please contact the chairman of the Working Group and request to be included in the list of participants. The Groups are open and we wish for active participation from members. Funding for travel to WG meetings can be requested from the Working Group leaders.

3. Eumetcal Aviation Course dates announced

The second Eumetcal Aviation course “Awareness of significant weather phenomena for aeronautics” will be delivered by Ecole Nationale de la Météorologie of Météo-France from

1 September to 7 November 2008.

The course will be delivered online and there will be no face-to-face period associated to this course. The course will have online lessons, assignments and exercises and will have trainers from the civil aviation administration and Météo-France.

The course registration will open soon and will close at the end of May. Course will have 15 places, with 5 students minimum to carry out the course. The Course registration fee is 700 EUR. The objective of the course is to develop the awareness of significant weather phenomena for aeronautics. The course is aimed at meteorologist personnel or equivalent involved in forecasting or meteorological services for the world of aeronautics.

4. METAR Module published

The METAR Code module, prepared by the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) and Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) has been published in the Eumetcal intraLibrary. This module is a stand-alone module aimed to be used independently by all concerned with the METAR code. The module needs to be downloaded onto your computer and launched for local viewing. The module will be extended in the future to include also the TAF code. For more information on the module, please contact Mr. Michael Grünebaum.

5. Eumetcal Report 2007 Available

6. Eumetcal Satellite Course 2009

EUMETSAT and the DWD are drawing up plans to transform the annual international satellite seminar into a complete Eumetcal blended learning course. The course would be delivered by EUMETSAT by highly experienced satellite experts. The initial course dates for the first Eumetcal Satellite Course are in June 2009. More information on the course developments will follow in autumn 2008. Watch out for the Eumetcal newsletter and website for the most up to date information!
